The social networking site, Facebook, was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, a sophomore at Harvard. In the beginning, Facebook was a social network used just by students at Harvard (Posner). Soon, the site started to grow. In 2006, Facebook was open to users who were not students, and by 2008 Facebook could be used in 35 languages (Kirkpatrick). Today, Facebook has almost 500 million users, and according to Posner, "About 40 percent of the United States population now uses Facebook." A survey of students and adults in Colorado shows that 86 percent of teenagers and 43 percent of adults have a Facebook profile ("Negative Effects of"). Facebook has become a very popular site, but the site is often negatively viewed.

Since Facebook is so widely used, many people believe that there are several negative effects associated with the site. These effects can include anything from no privacy to cyber bullying to addiction. Although there are many privacy settings to choose from on Facebook, information can still find a way to slip from the boundaries and spread. Some people view Facebook as an easy and convenient way to harass others, so cyber bullying is now a huge issue on Facebook. Many people spend too much time using Facebook, and some become addicted to it. Some of the negative effects Facebook has may be easy to notice, but several users believe the site does not include any negative effects. 64 percent of adults and 82 percent of teenagers believe Facebook has negative effects ("Negative Effects of"). This web page will outline the three largest negative effects of Facebook and how they can lead to more negative effects.
